Visit of the Lebanese Army Commander in Chief to the Irish-Pol Batt HQ in Al-Tiri - Bint Jbeil
The Lebanese Army Commander in Chief General Joseph Aoun, visited the Irish-Pol Batt HQ in Al-Tiri, Bint Jbeil district, where he honored the four Irish soldiers whose vehicle was shot at in the town of Al-Aqibiya on 12/14/2022, which led to the martyrdom of Private Sean Cormac Rooney and the wounding of his three comrades. The honoring took place in the presence of the Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon - UNIFIL, Major General Aroldo Lázaro, the Commander of Sector West in UNIFIL, Brigadier General Giuseppe Bertoncello, the Commander of the Irish-Pol Batt, its officers and personnel, and the commanders of Army units deployed in the south.
After a group of the battalion's members performed the military honors, the army commander laid a wreath on the battalion's martyrs' monument and stood with the audience for a minute of silence, then wrote a word in the condolence book.
He delivered a speech in which he said: "The Irish-Polish battalion has a long history of service within UNIFIL since 1978, during which time it offered 48 martyrs among its members. I salute the battalion's members, the heroic peacekeepers, who are far from their homelands and their families in order to maintain peace in Lebanon and support the people of South Lebanon".
General Aoun praised the sacrifices of the UNIFIL units that work closely with the Lebanese Army to maintain security and stability in the south, and concluded by saying: "I reaffirm the continuation of cooperation between the Army and UNIFIL as a basic strategic partner, in order to implement Resolution 1701."
On the other hand, Major General Lázaro thanked the Army in the person of General Aoun for its solidarity with UNIFIL, stressing that it will continue to perform its mission professionally within the framework of Resolution 1701 in coordination with the Lebanese Army, appreciating its efforts in terms of investigating the incident.
In conclusion, General Aoun handed the commander of the Irish-Pol Batt the Medal for Wounds to each of the three wounded soldiers, as a token of loyalty and appreciation for their service and sacrifices within the framework of the peacekeeping mission that their battalion is carrying out in southern Lebanon.
